OPENING NIGHT SCREENING OF THE 1971 CLASSIC DOCUMENTARY BLUE  WATER, WHITE DEATH

On Saturday, July 28th the Festival reaches into the past to celebrate the DVD launch of the important documentary, BLUE WATER, WHITE DEATH by the late Peter Gimbel. This history-making film chronicles the real-life expedition of four deep-sea divers and intrepid filmmakers on a quest to capture the first-ever 35mm underwater film footage of the majestic-but-deadly great white shark, before the adventure filmmaking genre existed.  In 1969, armed with only their cameras that had been made specially for this film, underwater adventurer and director Peter Gimbel, world renown shark and underwater experts Ron and Valerie Taylor and underwater cinematography expert Stan Waterman, set out on a 12,000-mile journey traveling from Durban, South Africa, and across the Indian Ocean to study and film this powerful predator in its natural habitat.

Their aluminium cages, with bars that were bent by the awesome power of the sharks’ fins will be on display at the Festival.  The re-launch of this film will include a panel discussion with some of the original crew and a chance to see a remastered version of the film that inspired JAWS and just about every other film made about great white sharks.

Musical Guest – Chris Beard  - Sunday July 29th - 8:30 PM – Woods Hole Community Hall - $10.00

Chris Beard joins the leaders of the newest generation poised to take music into the next century. Beard was born into the Blues of Rochester, New York on August 29, 1957 as son of blues guitarist Joe Beard, who is just now receiving recognition as a recording artist. Chris grew up surrounded by blues players and the music. Naturally there were many greats passing through the house as they came to town to do shows with Joe and his band. Buddy Guy and Matt Murphy are just two of the many ace guitarists Chris remembers from those early days. Chris Picked up the guitar at age five and there was no looking back. The first tune he could pick out was “Green Onions”, which is appropriate as that funky mix of blues and instrumental panache that characterizes so much of his style today. At age 15, Beard was working steadily with an established R&B band, now known as national recording artists, CAMEO. Invited to go on the road, mom said no, he had to finish school. After years of working as a sideman in local bands and with his father, Chris took the big step of fronting his own group and setting out to establish himself as a serious modern Blues artist. With songwriting influences acknowledged such as Luther Allison, Albert King, Buddy Guy and Johnny “guitar” Watson, this young man has also carved out an identity for himself as a talented writer. In June of 1998, Beard released his first CD “Barwalkin”, which earned him a 1998 nomination for the W.C. Handy Award, “Best New Blues Artist”, the Oscar of the blues world. In 1999 he won the Muddy Waters Award by Blues Beat Magazine, “New Talent of the Year”. Chris Beard’s warm soulful voice was ideally suited to his material and the songs were written by Chris and steeped in the Blues tradition, but with a nice new contemporary edge.

This is the program for “Squealing Pegs 2007”, the 5th annual student animation show, from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. The show is curated by Leland Burke, Assistant Professor of Animation, Flip Johnson, Associate Professor of Animation  and Film, and Steve Gentile, Visiting Lecturer in Animation. Students from all departments at Mass Art submitted over 300 animated films for this year's show, from which the committee chose 39.  This is a pretty select set of films. We enjoy them. We think you will as well.

Flynn - Singer/Songwriter - Friday, August 3rd - Nimrod Restaurant - 10 pm - Free with Ticket Stub or $10 at the door

Flynn has carved out a thriving career as an artist, composer and producer. After capturing the "Outstanding Debut Release" at the Boston Music Awards, he completed his strongestselection of songs to date on onAn Amercian Wake (Black Wolf Records).

His new release reflects his adopted country of America with an honest, emotionally powerful and passionate view of American life within the framework of a masterful pop/rock production.

Flynn is a musician coming into his own. Along with his solo and band performances, he is in high demand with a steady stream of TV and film projects both as a composer and songwriter. Flynn has and continues to have song placements on major TV network shows such as: The Young and the Restless, One Life to Live, All My Children, Haunted. Stuck On You. His music is popping up in all sorts of places these days, for instance, Kenneth Cole recently picked one of Flynn's songs to be featured on the 15,000 CD samplers given out to customers at his high fashion shoe/clothing stores. Flynn's compelling live show has been affirmed by scoring openers with acts ranging from The Allman Brothers and Simple Minds to Seven Nations and Ellis Paul. Whether it is concert halls or intimate coffeehouse settings, Flynn combines his uncanny ability to reach people through song; drawing from the wisdom and insight that comes from surviving a life-changing event.  The songs are as honest, passionate and exciting as his life has been.

Barclay Martin - Singer/Songwriter - Saturday, August 4th - 11 pm Landfall Restaurant - Free with ticket stub or $10 at the door

A traveler by nature, Barclay Martin’s music has always reflected experiences wrought from taking the road less traveled. Having spent over 3 years of his life living abroad, his songs speak of the ties that bind, people, their hope and joy, sorrow and struggle. He weaves stories throughout his shows, looking intimately into the places and the events that brought them about. Formerly of the Michigan based folk/bluegrass quintet Potato Moon, Martin left the band in 2002 in order to embark on a trip to Latin America and to continue the development of his songwriting individually. Through his background as a troubadour and adventurer, he has become aware of the richness and beauty of the greater world firsthand. A Kansas City native, Martin is taking to the road again this time on a 10-month tour of the United States in support of his solo record “Promise on a String.” The record is, in many respects, a convergence of his background in homegrown music and the experiences taken from years of learning through travel. A blend of folk, jazz, pop, and bluegrass, it is an honest, organic sound, which calls upon the ancient tones that reverberate through the halls of American music.
